The OpenAI API can be applied to nearly any task involving generating natural language, code, or images. Prompts:

Designing prompts is essentially "programming" the model. This is typically done by providing instructions or a few examples. Unlike most other NLP services designed for specific tasks like sentiment classification or named entity recognition, completions and chat completions can be used for almost any task, including content or code generation, summarization, expansion, dialogue, creative writing, style transformation, and more.

Tokens:

Our models understand and process text by breaking it down into tokens, which can be words or character chunks. For instance, the word "hamburger" is broken into tokens like "ham," "bur," and "ger," while short and common words like "pear" are a single token. The number of tokens processed in an API request depends on your input and output length. As a rough guideline, for English text, one token is approximately equivalent to 4 characters or 0.75 words.

Models:

The API supports a range of models with different capabilities and price points. GPT-4 is our latest and most powerful model, while GPT-3.5-Turbo is optimized for chat interactions. For more details on these models and other offerings, visit the model documentation.

Temperature:

In simple terms, the temperature parameter controls how deterministic the model's output is. Lower values result in more deterministic outputs, while higher values may produce more random or creative outputs. We are also adding more weight to other possible tokens. In practical applications, lower temperature values can be used for tasks like quality assurance (QA) to make the model return fact-based and concise results. For creative tasks like poetry generation, you can increase the temperature parameter as needed.
